Reliability issues caused by hydrogen and water are typically resolved through using a combination of process improvements and by the use of passive materials called getters.
Getters are designed to react with the contaminants within a hermetic enclosure to remove them (through absorption or adsorption) from the system. In high reliability packages it is common to use a getter material that will sorb both hydrogen and water vapor.
Hi-Rel’s newest addition in our line of gettering products sorbs both species using well understood chemistry which has been in use since the 1960s. These getters can easily be configured in nearly any form-factor for convenient mounting in a hermetic package.
